The Team

Craneware is looking for passionate software engineers that are excited about working with Big Data technology to drive improvements in the US-based healthcare market. We are growing a team of strong thinkers and innovators that are willing to work closely with product and customer-facing teams to design and develop new applications in the Cloud.

We are expanding our current platform and SaaS product offerings by using cutting edge technology to process very large data sets that will provide actionable insights for our customers. Architecting our solutions with a best of breed approach to technology, both .NET and Java-based platforms are leveraged in order to provide the necessary scale and rapidly bring products to market. We are interested in finding a skilled Lead Software Engineer to join one of our Edinburgh based teams. You’ll be working in a small and friendly agile team of talented software and automation engineers to deliver high quality and elegant cloud-based software solutions that have impact on millions of people, leveraging the Azure platform and latest technologies. The Lead Engineer role is a 100% technical opportunity, responsible for defining, embedding and demonstrating the highest technical standards while leading with the design, implementation and delivery of solutions as delegated by the Software Manager.

You Will Be

  • Working with an agile delivery team to contribute to the design and development of software releases using Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) methodology
  • Designing well architected, maintainable solutions using appropriate design principles, for example, design patterns and SOLID principles
  • Ensuring the team investigates and resolves software defects or outages in a timely manner; applying additional testing gates to prevent future failures. Ensuring sufficient code coverage of deliverables by the use of automated tests
  • Leading continuous improvement and contributing towards defining Engineering Software Standards and Lean initiatives, leading the adoption of best practice
  • Reviewing peer code against Craneware development standards to ensure high quality code and consistency
  • Working with product management to provide technical solutions to meet product requirements
  • Working with other Lead Engineers to define and apply consistent technical standards, quality gates and apply them across Product Delivery
  • Responsible for developing solutions that minimise cost of maintenance, that are easy to understand and easy to develop further
  • Providing technical leadership by supporting, training and mentoring engineers
  • Providing technical direction to team(s) and technical delivery plan(s) for the current assigned solution(s) while driving innovation
  • Participating in technical recruitment
  • Identifying and implementing changes that improve the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), in areas such as speed and productivity, through the use of Proof of Concepts and prototyping (by working with Development, QA, DevOps)
  • Creating, where appropriate, and participating in, internal departmental activities, such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) Workshops, Agile Town Halls, Standards Committees, presenting Proof of Concepts with new tools that would add benefit to Craneware
  • Responsible for ensuring the team is taking the necessary steps, in order for the system or solution to be easily understood by others: easy to maintain, easy to troubleshoot, have excellent logging, have clearing monitoring and high availability
  • Responsible for ensuring that released features are production ready: addressing technical conflicts; documenting and quantifying technical debt; meeting Non Functional Requirements (NFRs); escalating risks to Software Managers in a timely manner in relation to the assigned solution(s)

  • Working across a number of different tools and technologies

Knowledge

  • Advanced technical knowledge and understanding of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools (e.g. TFS or Jira)
  • In-depth understanding of Craneware Application Lifecycle Management methodology and Craneware software standards
  • An in-depth understanding of software principles for example SOLID principles and design patterns and how to apply them
  • In-depth understanding of the different architecture models, and their costs, pros and cons; existing systems architecture and release pipelines; automated testing methods and their applications; and TDD
  • Is perceived as a product expert and trusted technical advisor
